To attend a class on Zoom, you'll generally need a computer or mobile device with a reliable internet connection and basic audio/video capabilities. Here's a breakdown of the typical system requirements:
1. Internet Connection:
- Broadband wired or wireless (Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G/LTE): A stable connection is crucial for a smooth experience.
- Recommended bandwidth for attendees:
- Audio VoIP: 60-80 kbps (down)
- Screen sharing only (no video thumbnail): 50-75 kbps (down)
- Screen sharing with video thumbnail: 50-150 kbps (down)
- High-quality video (panelists video on): ~600 kbps (down)
- 720p HD video (panelists video on): ~1.2-1.8 Mbps (down)
- 1080p HD video (panelists video on): ~2-3 Mbps (down)
- General Recommendation: While Zoom can work with lower speeds, for a good experience with video and screen sharing, it's often recommended to have at least 20 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload.
2. Audio:
- Speakers and a microphone: These can be built-in, USB plug-in, or wireless Bluetooth. A headset with a microphone is often recommended for better audio clarity and to minimize background noise.
3. Video:
- A webcam or HD webcam: This can be built-in to your device or an external USB plug-in.
4. Device & Operating System:
- Desktop or Laptop:
- Windows: Windows 7 or higher (Windows 10/11 recommended).
- macOS: macOS 10.10 or higher (later versions recommended).

- Processor (Mobile): Any 1 GHz single-core processor or better (non-Intel).
6. Web Browser (for Zoom Web App):
If you're joining via the web app instead of the desktop client, ensure your browser is up-to-date. Generally, the current and past two versions of:
- Chrome
- Firefox
- Edge
- Safari (on Mac and iOS)
Important Notes:
- Latest Versions: Always use the latest version of the Zoom application and your operating system for the best performance and security.
- Resource Usage: Zoom can consume significant resources, especially when using video and screen sharing. Closing other unnecessary applications can help reduce this usage.
- Test Your Connection: Before each class, it's a good idea to test your internet speed and Zoom connection to ensure everything is working correctly. You can often do this through Zoom's test page or a general internet speed test website.
While the minimum requirements allow you to join, exceeding them will generally lead to a more seamless and enjoyable learning experience.
